Nous sommes en Février 1927. Vient de mourir le riche Marcel Péricourt.  Madeleine, son épouse   normalement hérite de l'empire financier. Mais Marcel avait aussi un fils, Paul. Celui-ci va entrainer la ruine de Madeleine en cette période de pré-crise de 1929.

Le film nous montre la vie de Madeleine qui d'une fille riche va vivre une vie de pauvre. Un déclassement social assez dur pour elle et son fils mais deux personnes qui seront redémarrer dans une vie nouvelle.
